Can You Get Fordyce Spots On Lips After Juvederm?

What are Fordyce spots?

Fordyce spots, also called Fordyce granules, are whitish-yellow bumps that can occur on the edge of your lips or inside your cheeks. It is not known what causes Fordyce spots, but some studies have linked their development to hormonal changes, and others suggest that they start to form while an embryo is growing in the womb. However, although these glands are technically not in their correct place, they are not associated with any disease or illness.

Fordyce spots and Juverderm

Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid-based dermal filler. There are several products in the Juvederm family. They all are used to help people address the facial signs of aging. Each product in the Juvederm line features different bonding and concentrations of hyaluronic acid. The different products are each tailored to target specific problems when injected into different areas and depths. Juvederm fillers have a smooth, gel-like consistency.

Juvederm types:

•          Juvederm Voluma XC adds volume beneath your skin’s surface to increase the size of your cheeks.

•          Juvederm XC and Juvederm Vollure XC address the loss of skin elasticity and fill out wrinkles and lines around the mouth and nose — known as smile lines.

•          Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC work as nonsurgical lip enhancement treatments.

Can you get Fordyce spots on lips after Juvederm?

If have you noticed those little white dots on your lips after getting a Juvederm filler, there is little or nothing to worry about. Fordyce Spots are on everyone’s lips and on occasion, with fillers, they can become more pronounced.  Lip moisturizers can minimize their appearance and they will revert to their previous “look” once the filler takes form over time and when the filler is not there, you will not really notice them again.  It is also important to note that prolonged white blanching after the lip fillers, may be caused by a lack of blood flow to the affected area and reduced temperature of the lips.

To reduce the risk of complications after Juverderm, avoid touching or massaging the treated area, and avoid strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours after treatment. Bruising can be hidden with concealer.

For the first two weeks after treatment, patients are advised to avoid unnecessary sun, heat, and cold exposure, and any products that contain alcohol. It is important for patients to wear sunscreen.

Patients may experience some minor swelling and bruising. Swelling and bruising usually subside within 24-48 hours. However, hyaluronic acid fillers attract water. So you may have extra fullness in the areas injected, which should resolve within 10-14 days when the results soften, and further enhancements become visible. For this reason, it is best to wait a week or more after the treatment, for the filler to settle, to assess your results.

Work closely with your aesthetic team to plan any upcoming facial procedures as warming treatments (like lasers) could break down your fillers more quickly if they are scheduled too soon after your Juvederm lip filler.
