Stilpane Syrup: Uses, Ingredients, Dosage, Side Effects

Stilpane syrup is a South African medication containing the following active ingredients: Codeine Phosphate 5mg/5ml, Promethazine Hcl 6.5mg/5ml, and Paracetamol 120mg/5ml Syrup. Stilpane Syrup is used for Fever, Ear pain, Cold, Relief of mild to moderately severe pain, Headache, Perennial allergic rhinitis, and other conditions.

Stilpane syrup works when broken down by the liver into morphine; blocking histamine H1; increasing the pain threshold and increasing the blood flow across the skin, heat loss and sweating.

In South Africa, Stilpane syrup is a controlled prescription medication which implies that it can only be supplied by a pharmacist on prescription and are subject to tight restrictions because of its potential to produce addiction. Codeine abuse accounted for 2.5% of roughly 20 000 admissions to South African drug treatment centers in 2014, according to a South African Medical Research Council(SAMRC) study published in the South African Medical Journal.

Stilpane Syrup Uses

Stilpane Syrup is used for the treatment, control, prevention, & improvement of the following diseases, conditions, and symptoms:

•          Ear pain

•          Perennial allergic rhinitis

•          Seasonal allergic rhinitis

•          Vasomotor rhinitis

•          Allergic skin manifestations of urticaria

•          Dermographism

•          Preoperative sedation

•          Toothache

•          Joint pain

•          Period pain.

Before using Stilpane Syrup, inform your doctor about your current list of medications, over-the-counter products (e.g. vitamins, herbal supplements, etc.), allergies, pre-existing diseases, and current health conditions (e.g. pregnancy, upcoming surgery, etc.). Some health conditions may make you more susceptible to the side effects of the drug. Take as directed by your doctor or follow the direction printed on the product insert. •          Acute pancreatitis

•          Addison’s disease

•          Avoid driving a car or operating machinery

•          Avoid taking alcohol or other central nervous system depressants

•          Avoid using it if allergic to paracetamol

•          Biliary tract disease

How to use Stilpane syrup

Follow the directions on the prescription label. Use a specially marked spoon or container to measure each dose. Ask your pharmacist if you do not have one. Household spoons are not accurate. If the medicine upsets your stomach, take it with food. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. This medicine is not for use in children less than 12 years of age. Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 18 years of age after surgery to remove the tonsils and/or adenoids.

What if I took too much Stilpane syrup?

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact a poison control center or emergency room at once. If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. Otherwise, call a poison control center right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center.

What are the side effects of Stilpane Syrup?

The following is a list of possible side-effects that may occur from all constituting ingredients of Stilpane Syrup. This is not a comprehensive list. These side-effects are possible, but do not always occur. Some of the side-effects may be rare but serious. Consult your doctor if you observe any of the following side-effects, especially if they do not go away.

•          Drowsiness

•          Lightheadedness

•          Dizziness

•          Sedation

•          Shortness of breath

What are the Stilpane Syrup Interactions I should know?

If you use other drugs or over-the-counter products at the same time, the effects of Stilpane Syrup may change. This may increase your risk for side effects or cause your drug not to work properly. Tell your doctor about all the drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are using, so that your doctor can help you prevent or manage drug interactions. Stilpane Syrup may interact with the following drugs and products:

•          Alcohol

•          Antianxiety agents

•          Anticholinergics

•          Antiemetics

•          Antihistamines

•          Antipsychotics

Stilpane Syrup – Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Stilpane Syrup is a contraindication. In addition, Stilpane Syrup should not be used if you have the following conditions:

•          Acute or severe bronchial asthma

•          Hepatic impairment

•          Hypercarbia

•          Hypersensitivity

•          Hypersensitivity to codeine

•          Paralytic ileus.
