Best Vitamins and Minerals To Take If You Test Positive For COVID-19

The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is the defining global health crisis of our time and the greatest challenge the world has faced since World War Two. Since its emergence in China, the virus has spread to every continent. Despite the tragic loss of lives on a global scale as a result of this respiratory condition, many have come to terms with the fact that the disease might be one we would have to live with for some time considering the fact that being fully vaccinated is not a full-proof defense against the virus.

Studies have shown that some vitamins and micronutrients may be beneficial if you test positive for COVID-19. According to a study published in the Journal of the Latin American Society of Nutrition (SLAN), you should consider taking the following supplements to help bolster your immunity against the virus:

Vitamin C: This vitamin has been hailed for years as a go-to source for aiding the immune system. Supplementing with vitamin C has been shown to reduce the duration and severity of upper respiratory tract infections, including the common cold. A large review of 29 studies in 11,306 people demonstrated that regularly supplementing with vitamin C at an average dose of 1–2 grams per day reduced the duration of colds by 8% in adults and 14% in children. Doctors recommend that adults take a supplement of 1000 mg twice every day.

Vitamin D: Most often we get our vitamin D through the sun, but low levels of vitamin D have been associated with a greater risk of developing respiratory conditions in adults and children. In a 2019 review of randomized control studies in 11,321 people, supplementing with vitamin D significantly decreased the risk of respiratory infections in people deficient in this vitamin and lowered infection risk in those with adequate vitamin D levels.

Doctors recommend adults take a supplement of vitamin D3 of 1000 International Units (IU) once or twice per day, consumed during meals. For those who have a vitamin D deficiency, consult with your doctor or dietician for an accurate dosage of the supplement.

Zinc: This mineral is crucial for the normal development and functioning of cells mediating part of the immune system. Zinc is needed for immune cell development and communication and plays an important role in the inflammatory response. Zinc also specifically protects tissue barriers in the body and helps prevent foreign pathogens from entering. According to research, 16% of all deep respiratory infections worldwide have been found to be due to zinc deficiency.

Studies have also shown that increased concentrations of zinc can inhibit the replication of viruses like SARS-coronavirus. Experts recommend adults take a zinc supplement of 40 mg or less once a day.
