Drugs Q & A

Why Was Legatrin Discontinued?

Legatrin PM is a combination medication that contains acetaminophen and diphenhydramine.

Acetaminophen (500 mg) – Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer commonly used to treat mild to moderate pain and fever. It works by blocking the production of certain chemicals in the body that cause pain and fever.

Diphenhydramine hydrochloride (50 mg) – Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine that is commonly used to treat allergies, itching, and sleep problems. In Legatrin PM, diphenhydramine is added to help induce sleep and enhance the pain-relieving effects of acetaminophen.

Legatrin PM is primarily used to relieve pain, reduce fever, and help individuals fall asleep. It’s commonly used to treat conditions such as headaches, menstrual cramps, arthritis, and minor aches and pains.

Legatrin PM is produced by Church & Dwight Co., Inc.  a major American manufacturer of household and personal care products. The company was founded in 1846 and is headquartered in Ewing, New Jersey. Some of the popular brands produced by Church & Dwight include Arm & Hammer, Trojan condoms, OxiClean, First Response, and Nair, among others.

Is Legatrin addictive?

No, Legatrin PM contains acetaminophen and diphenhydramine, neither of which is considered addictive when used as directed. Acetaminophen is not habit-forming and does not produce the same euphoric effects as opioids or other addictive drugs. Diphenhydramine is not considered addictive, but it can cause drowsiness and may lead to dependence if taken in high doses or for extended periods.

However, it’s important to note that any medication, including Legatrin PM, has the potential to be misused or abused. Using Legatrin PM in larger amounts or more frequently than directed, or using it to induce sleep or alter mood, can be dangerous and may lead to dependence or addiction. It’s important to always follow the recommended dosage and usage instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the medication label to minimize the risk of adverse effects or addiction. If you have concerns about the potential for addiction or dependence on Legatrin PM, talk to your healthcare provider.

Why Was Legatrin Discontinued?

Legatrin PM is still available for purchase in the United States and other countries. However, there was a temporary shortage due to the recall of a specific batch of Legatrin PM 50-count bottles.

The following batches were affected Lot #: HY9042, exp. date: 02/2022; Lot #: HY9094 or HY9112, exp. date: 04/2022; Lot #: HY9134, exp. date 05/2022; Lot #: HY9267, exp. date: 09/2022.

One of the most significant risks associated with Legatrin PM is the risk of liver damage from acetaminophen. Taking too much acetaminophen or taking it with alcohol or other medications that also contain acetaminophen can increase the risk of liver damage. It’s important to follow the recommended dosage instructions and avoid taking more than the recommended amount of Legatrin PM or other medications containing acetaminophen.

Diphenhydramine can also cause drowsiness and impair coordination, which can increase the risk of falls and accidents. It can also cause dry mouth, blurred vision, and other side effects.

Legatrin PM may not be appropriate for everyone, especially individuals with certain medical conditions or who are taking other medications. It’s important to speak with a healthcare provider before taking Legatrin PM or any other medication to determine if it is safe and appropriate for you.

Additionally, Legatrin PM has been discontinued by the manufacturer, so it may not be available for purchase in all areas. If you are unable to find Legatrin PM or have concerns about its safety or effectiveness, speak with your healthcare provider about alternative options for pain relief or sleep aid.

Is Legatrin PM still being manufactured by Pfizer?

No, Legatrin PM was originally manufactured by the pharmaceutical company, Wyeth Consumer Healthcare, which is a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc. However, Legatrin PM has been discontinued and is no longer being manufactured by Pfizer.

Alternatives To Legatrin PM

There are several over-the-counter alternatives to Legatrin PM that may be effective for pain relief and/or sleep aid. Some examples include:

•        Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin) for pain relief

•        Diphenhydramine (such as Benadryl) or doxylamine (such as Unisom) for sleep aid

•        Melatonin supplements for sleep aid

•        Combination products that contain pain relievers and sleep aids, such as Tylenol PM or Advil PM (which contain diphenhydramine)

It’s important to speak with a healthcare provider or pharmacist before taking any new medication or supplement, as they can help determine if it is safe and appropriate for you, and can provide guidance on dosage and potential side effects.
