Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Suflave, has announced that the US Food
Drug Administration (FDA) has approved their new
laxative for colonoscopy preparation in adults. Suflave is a lemon-lime-flavored liquid that comes in a carton containing two bottles and two flavor packets. Each bottle consists of specific quantities of polyethylene glycol, sodium sulfate, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and sodium chloride. One bottle, along with a flavor packet, constitutes one dose. To achieve a complete colonoscopy preparation, both
need to be administered, accompanied by an additional 16 ounces of water after each dose.
According to the company, 94% of patients in a clinical trial achieved successful bowel cleansing using Suflave.
Patients reported that Suflave tastes like a sports drink and described it as having a neutral to very pleasant flavor.
Most patients found it easy to consume and expressed willingness to request it for future colonoscopies.
The palatable lemon-lime flavor of Suflave is expected to reduce hesitancy associated with bowel preparation, thus improving patient comfort and increasing the likelihood of successful procedures. Suflave is set to be available by prescription in the United States starting in early August.
