Can I Use Biofreeze For Menstrual Cramps?

Menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) are throbbing or cramping pains in the lower abdomen. Many women have menstrual cramps just before and during their menstrual periods. For some women, the discomfort is merely annoying. For others, menstrual cramps can be severe enough to interfere with everyday activities for a few days every month.

Menstrual cramps tend to begin after ovulation when the ovaries release an egg that travels down the fallopian tube. Pain can affect the lower abdomen and lower back. In about 10%  of people who menstruate, the discomfort is severe enough to affect their daily life for 1–3 days each month.

Conditions such as endometriosis or uterine fibroids can cause menstrual cramps. Treating the cause is key to reducing the pain. Menstrual cramps that aren’t caused by another condition tend to lessen with age and often improve after giving birth.

What is Biofreeze?

Biofreeze is a cooling menthol formula that is fast-acting, long-lasting, and provides penetrating pain relief for sore muscles, backaches, sore joints, and arthritis. Biofreeze comes in a variety of formats, well suited for application on small and large muscle areas. However, this product is not formulated with Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Biofreeze applies easily for penetrating pain relief to body parts such as the back, neck, shoulder, knee, hand, wrist, elbow, foot, and ankle. The theory behind why Biofreeze is effective lies in the “Gate Control Theory.” When the body experiences stress or trauma, certain receptors communicate the feeling of pain to the brain through the spinal cord. The cold feeling resulting from Biofreeze applied to the painful area is assumed to override these pain signals, thus providing relief.

Using cold therapy is also shown to lessen inflammation and swelling, two major causes of joint and muscle pain. Biofreeze may also temporarily manage nerve activity, another contributor to pain.

Biofreeze therapy works similarly to ice in reducing inflammation and improving circulation but offers more powerful, comfortable, convenient, and long-lasting pain relief.

Can I Use Biofreeze For Menstrual Cramps?

Yes, Biofreeze can provide some relief from cramping pains in the lower abdomen even though it is not formulated with a Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug which is the primary over-the-counter (OTC) form of pain relief recommended for menstrual pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Biofreeze contains menthol, which can alleviate the pain of muscle cramps, including working as pain relief for period cramps! Along with providing a cooling, soothing sensation, menthol also enlarges blood vessels through a process called vasodilation.

Women who use cooling herb-based ointments and oils on their lower abdomen report relief and comfort when they experience period pains. Menthol-based ointments and oils help ease the pain by improving blood flow and creating a cool sensation on your skin. The products enlarge blood vessels and increase blood flow to the areas affected due to period cramps.  The anti-inflammatory properties of the herb reduce inflammation and ease the pain.

According to an article published in the Iranian Journal Of Nursing And Midwifery Research, on a 2016 study that aimed to evaluate the effects of mint-based drugs on Dysmenorrhea, it was found that while mint did not significantly reduce bleeding, it did however significantly help in reducing pain. A similar 2018 study based on 127 young women also revealed that peppermint oil capsules were as effective in relieving menstrual pain as mefenamic acid, which is a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

How Biofreeze Works For Menstrual Pain

Biofreeze works for menstrual pain by providing temporary relief through its active ingredient, menthol. Here’s how Biofreeze may help alleviate menstrual pain:

1.      Cooling Effect: Biofreeze contains menthol, which produces a cooling sensation when applied to the skin. This cooling effect can help numb the area and provide a temporary distraction from pain.

2.      Numbing Sensation: The menthol in Biofreeze has mild anesthetic properties. When applied to the skin, it can create a numbing effect, reducing the perception of pain in the area where it is applied.

3.      Relaxation and Muscle Tension Relief: Menstrual pain often involves muscle cramps and tension in the abdominal and lower back areas. Biofreeze’s cooling effect and numbing properties can help relax the muscles, providing relief from cramping and discomfort.

4.      Distraction from Pain: The cooling sensation provided by Biofreeze can also serve as a distraction from menstrual pain. By focusing on the cooling sensation, it can help redirect attention away from the discomfort.

How Long Does Biofreeze Take to Work For Menstrual Pain?

The time it takes for Biofreeze to work and provide relief for menstrual pain can vary from person to person. Upon application, Biofreeze typically starts working within a few minutes. The menthol in Biofreeze produces a cooling effect that can help numb the area and provide temporary relief from pain and discomfort. However, the duration of its effectiveness can vary depending on factors such as the individual’s sensitivity, the amount applied, and the severity of the menstrual pain.

Some individuals may experience immediate relief, while for others, it may take a bit longer to feel the full effects. It’s recommended to give it some time to work and assess how it affects your pain levels. If you don’t experience significant relief after a reasonable amount of time, you may need to explore other pain management options or consult with a healthcare professional for further guidance.

How To Use Biofreeze For Menstrual Pain

Biofreeze can be safely used topically to help alleviate menstrual pain. Here are the general steps for using Biofreeze for menstrual pain relief:

1.      Clean your hands and the area: Before applying Biofreeze, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Cleanse the area of your abdomen or lower back where you experience menstrual pain, ensuring it is free of dirt or other substances.

2.      Apply a thin layer: Take a small amount of Biofreeze gel or roll-on and apply a thin layer to the affected area. You can rub it gently into the skin using circular motions.

3.      Massage the area: Once Biofreeze is applied, you can gently massage the gel into the skin for better absorption and to enhance its effects. Massage in a circular or back-and-forth motion as needed.

4.      Wash hands after application: After applying Biofreeze, wash your hands again to prevent any accidental contact with sensitive areas such as the eyes or mucous membranes.

5.      Follow usage instructions: Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer regarding the frequency and amount of Biofreeze to use. Avoid using excessive amounts or applying it more frequently than recommended.

It’s important to note that Biofreeze provides temporary pain relief and may not address the underlying causes of menstrual pain. If you experience severe or persistent menstrual pain, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation and guidance on managing your symptoms. Additionally, if you have any specific concerns or questions about using Biofreeze for menstrual pain relief, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional or refer to the product’s instructions and warnings provided by the manufacturer for personalized advice.
