Suprep Bowel Prep Kit: Uses, How it works, Dosage, Side Effects

What is Suprep Bowel Prep Kit?

Suprep is a mixture of sodium, potassium, and magnesium sulfate solution used to clean out the intestines before a certain bowel exam procedure (colonoscopy). It is a laxative that works by drawing large amounts of water into the colon, this causes watery bowel movements. Clearing stool from the intestines helps your doctor to better examine the intestines during your procedure.

Suprep is not an over-the-counter medication, it is only available as a prescription from your provider to prepare you for a colon cleansing before a colonoscopy.

How should I take Suprep Bowel Prep Kit?

Read the Medication Guide and Instructions for Use provided by your pharmacist before you start using this product and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Typical dosing for Suprep Bowel Prep Kit is as follows:

Adults: The recommended two-day regimen for adults consists of two 6-ounce doses of Suprep Bowel Prep Kit: the first dose is taken the evening before the colonoscopy and the second dose is taken the next day, the morning of the colonoscopy.

Pediatric Patients 12 Years of Age and Older: The recommended two-day regimen for pediatric patients 12 years of age and older consists of two 4.5-ounce doses of Suprep Bowel Prep Kit: the first dose is taken the evening before the colonoscopy and the second dose is taken the next day, the morning of the colonoscopy.

Follow any special diet instructions provided by your doctor. Usually, you may have a small breakfast or only clear liquids on the day before your procedure. After breakfast, you may only drink clear liquids until after your procedure. Do not drink milk or alcoholic beverages or eat/drink anything colored red or purple. To prevent becoming dehydrated, drink as much clear liquid as you can before, during, and after drinking this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.

When will you have a bowel movement after taking Suprep Bowel Prep Kit?

Bowel movements can happen pretty quickly after taking Suprep. Most people will expect a bowel movement about 1 hour after beginning Suprep Bowel Prep Kit. You should follow all the directions as prescribed by your provider. If you haven’t had a bowel movement by midnight the night before your procedure, you’ll need to call your healthcare provider for further instructions.

Do I have to drink the second bottle of Suprep Bowel Prep Kit?

Yes, you must drink both doses of Suprep Bowel Prep Kit for a complete bowel prep before colonoscopy. You should follow the directions exactly as prescribed by your provider.

What can I take after starting Suprep bowel prep Kit?

Once you start Suprep Bowel Prep Kit you should only consume certain liquids including water, strained fruit juice (no pulp), lemonade, coffee or tea (no dairy), chicken broth, gelatine desserts – no red or purple liquids.

Is Suprep bowel prep Kit safe for kidneys?

Suprep Bowel Prep Kit may cause really bad dehydration in some people who have kidney disease. People who have kidney disease or a history of kidney disease should let their provider know before taking Suprep.

What side effects can Suprep Bowel Prep Kit cause?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to Suprep: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor right away if you have:

•          a headache and dizziness;

•          little or no urination;

•          severe nausea or vomiting;

•          painful bloating or stomach cramps;

•          trouble drinking liquids;

•          mouth sores;

•          a seizure;

•          irregular heartbeats; or

•          worsening gout symptoms (joint pain, redness, or swelling).

Common Suprep side effects may include:

•          stomach pain or discomfort;

•          nausea, vomiting; or

•          mild bloating.

What other drugs will affect Suprep Bowel Prep Kit?

Suprep can make it harder for your body to absorb other medicines you take by mouth within 1 hour before your colon prep.

  • Do not take other laxatives (including bisacodyl, sodium picosulfate) while you are taking this medicine. Do not take any medicine by mouth within 1 hour before you start using this medicine.
  • Take chlorpromazine, digoxin, penicillamine, iron supplements, or tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after you take this medicine.
  • Do not drink milk or alcohol while you are using this medicine.
  • Some medicine can affect how this medicine works. Tell your doctor if you are using any of the following: Blood pressure medicine (including ACE inhibitors, ARBs), Diuretic (water pill) Medicine to treat depression NSAIDs (including aspirin, celecoxib, diclofenac, ibuprofen, naproxen).
