Omega XL: Strength, Dosage, Benefits, Side Effects

What is Omega XL?

Omega XL is a dietary supplement produced by Great Healthworks, Inc. and contains important omega-3s as well as additional fatty acids that promote joint function, mobility, and muscle recovery.

Omega-3 fats are an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body and affect the function of the cell receptors in these membranes. They provide the starting point for making hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation. They also bind to receptors in cells that regulate genetic function. Likely due to these effects, omega-3 fats have been shown to help prevent heart disease and stroke, may help control lupus, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis, and may play protective roles in cancer and other conditions.

What ingredients does Omega XL contain?

OmegaXL contains the following ingredients: Green Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus) oil extract (PSCO-524) containing omega fatty acids, extra virgin olive oil, d-alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E).

How much DHA and EPA is in Omega XL?

A randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of PCSO-524, a patented oil extract of the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) the active ingredient in Omega XL indicates that it contains an industry-standard EPA-18% (46.8 mg) and DHA-12% (36.4 mg) blend.

Does Omega XL work?

In a study of 50 participants, the group taking the active ingredient in OmegaXL, the lipid extract from the New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussel (PCSO-524), showed an 89% improvement in joint pain due to inflammation. 91% of the study participants taking OmegaXL reported improved quality of life.

In the same study, the group taking standard fish oil showed almost no improvement. What is PCSO-524? PCSO-524 is the acronym for the oil derived from the green-lipped mussel during the extraction process. It stands for the Perna Canaliculus which is the name of the species of this green-lipped mussel found in the pure waters of the Marlboro Sound, New Zealand, some of the purest waters in the world. As a premium green-lipped mussel, OmegaXL has no fishy aftertaste.

Is Omega XL FDA approved?

NO, Omega XL supplement is not FDA approved. The FDA does not “approve” dietary supplements because it does not approve foods. The FDA only approves pharmaceutical drug products. The manufacturers and distributors of dietary supplements like Omega XL are responsible for making sure their products are safe before they go to market.

Is it safe to take Omega XL?

Yes, Omega XL is safe to take in the recommended amounts. Side effects of omega-3 supplements are usually mild. They include, bad breath, bad-smelling sweat, headache, and gastrointestinal symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, and diarrhea. Several large studies have linked higher blood levels of long-chain omega-3s with higher risks of prostate cancer.

However, other research has shown that men who frequently eat seafood have lower prostate cancer death rates and that dietary intakes of long-chain omega-3s aren’t associated with prostate cancer risk. The reason for these apparently conflicting findings is unclear. Omega-3 supplements may interact with drugs that affect blood clotting. It’s uncertain whether people with seafood allergies can safely take fish oil supplements.

What are the health benefits of Omega XL?

Promotes joint, muscle, immune and respiratory health. OmegaXL goes beyond standard omega-3 supplements that mainly contain just EPA and DHA. It is a concentrated source of green-lipped mussel oil with a powerful combination of healthy fatty acids and lipid mediators that promotes joint, muscle, immune and respiratory health. The oil extract from the green-lipped mussels contains over 30 fatty acids, including DHA and EPA.

Relieve joint pain, inflammation, muscle pain, and soreness. OmegaXL provides a safe, daily supplement that naturally promotes joint health and improved mobility.

No fishy aftertaste. OmegaXL is provided in a convenient, small, and easy-to-swallow soft gel with no fishy aftertaste or burps. This product is free of gluten, allergenic levels of shellfish protein, artificial ingredients, milk, yeast, and corn.

Omega XL FDA Warning and Omega-3 Fatty Acids Concentration

The FDA recently issued a warning letter to Great Healthworks, Inc. following a review of the company’s website, which found statements made about Omega XL and ProbioticXL supplements to be drug claims.

OmegaXL was promoted with statements such as “[S]hown to help relieve joint pain due to inflammation” and “OmegaXL is widely recognized as a leader in natural relief from pain due to inflammation.” It has also been promoted as a “highly concentrated Omega-3 ‘Super Oil’ supplement, ” although past ConsumerLab tests of the product found surprisingly few omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) despite excellent Omega XL reviews online.
